3d Generation farmer, Marine Biologist, MBA. Unsurprisingly, about #aquaculture development. Currently working to help make farmed salmon the most sustainable animal protein in the world.

Mostly salt water. Frustrated photographer. Weekend dirt farmer.
Not all salmon is the same (why do people always assume that?)—adjust your recipe and style accordingly. I love wild fish, but farmed salmon is beautiful to cook with.

No Wild Salmon, No Problem: Why You Should Grill Farmed Salmon Instead - Daily Meal
Farmed salmon tends to be higher in fat so it doesn't dry out like wild-caught when grilled. In addition, it's less expensive and may have a better flavor.

Will admit to being amused by Craig Medred's reporting that Alaska claims "love for wild salmon cuts through partisan politics. No food is more important to the state’s culture, diet, identity and economy" only to have local stores full of farmed salmon.

Farmed salmon is absolutely safe and healthy to eat despite misconceptions. Not only is farmed-salmon more nutrient-dense than the best cuts of meat, studies show it delivers numerous health benefits. Salmon is an incredibly healthy food, regardless of whether it is wild-caught or farm-raised.

Early in Dr. Gideon Mordecai's career as a biologist, he thought his toughest challenge would be understanding intricate ecological systems. Instead, his attention has shifted to something much more disheartening—battling #DFO bureaucracy. @ubcoceans.bsky.social

These real impacts to wild #salmon (up to 40%of releases) seem staggeringly high. Yet it is this lobby that is often claiming that #salmonfarms should be shut down because of less than minimal risk to wild salmon. Hmmm?

Might as well begin with the quotes by the Captain. This the essence of why we need to farm more fish. I dug these out of some coffee table books way back in the mid-ninties and they seem to have gotten circulated around! #aquaculture #salmon

Very useful thread about a very painful lesson for people new to actual political activism.

You cannot persuade everyone. Or even most people. Choose wisely where you spend your energy.
Here's a quick mock-up of a graph I teach.

When scientists first get involved in policy activism, their first instinct is to try and persuade people in area A, people who most strongly disagree with them. However, those people often have no power. You can't persuade them, and also it doesn't matter

OK sure. But in what context? Blue foods are so much more climate-positive than terrestrial animal proteins. Is this comparison legitimate? Is it just splitting hairs? It would be good to put it against the footprints of terrestrial livestock. Either way, we need more protein for 10 Billion popn.
