Very excited to share our latest paper: We investigated landscape-scale predictors of #insect pest damage to #sugarbeet showing that the species’ ecology is determining their responses making unified approaches difficult #agroecology #pestcontrol www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Meet Harpalus politus, a predominantly granivorous #carabid beetle threatened with extinction in #Germany (RL1) that is found exclusively on dry grasslands on limestone soils 🪲. Suitable habitat management and traditional grazing regimes are needed to help the species survive 🌿🐑

For now I am off to new adventures starting a familiar realm - at the University of Würzburg where I will work on the pan-European #pollinator #biodiversity project #safeguard - stay tuned for updates in the coming months ...

A few weeks ago, after three years, my time at #SLU Uppsala sadly came to an end for now. I had a great time, met wonderful people, experienced Sweden at its best and at its worst and found a great mentor in my boss, Ola Lundin. Thank you so much for everything! Tack så mycket!

For this synthesis, we gathered 28 datasets with 1204 study sites across eight European countries with 345603 carabid observations belonging to 241 species. It was a great effort and I am very grateful to everyone who was involved!

In our synthesis, we show that within-field distance functions of carabids depend on their functional traits, the crop type and, to a lesser extent, adjacent habitat types, which may partly explain varying results in previous studies on the topic.

After more than five years of work, it is my great pleasure to announce that our synthesis on carabid within-field distribution is now published in Proceedings B!

As the BES jorunals have not made it over here yet, I am sharing this with you: We are looking for contributions to a special feature on the effects of planning & development on biodiversity, including adhering to policy and the processes involved with stakeholders. 9 days left!

The project was a great success – we gathered an incredible amount of data on 4673 species and user ID suggestions became better and better over the years. I am grateful to have been a part of this journey. Many thanks to all the users that supported the project over the years!

The end of an era: After 12 years,  439249 ID requests from 5800 users, the ID-module of the citizen science platform kerbtier.de ceased service yesterday night. I was part of the admin team since 2015 and it has been an important part of my life.

... and by monitoring densities of dispersing flea beetles in summer, we can predict spring oilseed rape crop injury in the following year which may help reduce insecticide use doi.org/10.1111/afe....

We showed that, while landscape effects are species-specific, spatiotemporal isolation of oilseed rape fields is a strong and universal predictor of flea beetle pest densities and related crop damages besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

This week, I communicated our recent research on predictions and landscape-level regulation of flea beetle pests in spring oilseed rape at the annual meeting of the Centre for Biological Control (CBC)

Hey BlueSky, I’m Fabian!

I’m an ecologist and entomologist, currently working in Sweden. I am interested in biodiversity 🦋🐝🐞 and related ecosystem functions 🌽🐛🕷️ in agroecosystems but occasionally also work on tiger beetle taxonomy 🔬

Follow for the science and stay for cute beetle pics!
