Of course I had to swim 20 laps every day to keep up my health and stall my death date! The Marriott Hotel where we are staying has an excellent lap pool with a jaw dropping view! Here is the panorama!

Today we experienced a coffee plantation complete with coffee plants, fruits, hullers, roasters, grinders and millers! Such a complex, difficult and detailed process to create one cup of coffee! Worth every step up and down the hills!

The Museum of painful memories! We were very impressed! It did not pull any punches telling the bloody violent history of the city, from the first Catholics killing off all the indigenous people who would not convert -To the Colombian cocain cartels whose violence killed thousands!

We have flown to Medellin Colombia, pronounced as Medejin! It averages about 5,000’ elevation and being close to the equator has a balmy climate during the day and cool at night! It is extremely hilly and the people are very open and friendly! I will be posting photos for those who follow me.

Here are photos of last years fall planting of Cascara sagrada and Quercus garryana
I am excited to see that they both survived our 3 month dry season. I watered them once a month down the black tubes that you see at the base. I had to haul the water in #5 buckets in my pickup!

It is continuing to become more apparent that we need to increase native vegetation in order to support local insects, birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals! I work on rewylding, the process of removing invasives and planting natives! Thuja plicata, Pseudotsuga and Alnus rubra this week!

Well! The Nerines just keep on thrusting themselves vertically and energetically out of the ground and showing off their pink… lips! I am so pleased with their robust activities!

We have all viewed the clothing changes of the trees of autumn. However, shrubs can also sport reds, russets, yellows, oranges and a little Lavendar! This is our front yard mass of bushes to hide the street corner. Half of what you see are broadleaf evergreens.

It is Saffron Crocus time once again! I usually harvest enough Saffron threads for one batch of Paella! The challenges are the rain and the tiny grey slugs!! I check every day, sometimes twice a day.

The joy of seeing the sudden vertical thrust of hot pink Nerine blossoms in the fall, here in the Portland area, is such a delight! They are very sensual and surprisingly tough! It takes them several years to thrive and bloom, but well worth the wait!

Fuchsia “White Knight’s Perle” is a sturdy tough plant that even in our colder winters sprouts predictably from its roots! The blooms in summer give me a cooling feeling like little icicles.

Filling the air with its amazingly profound scent is Osmanthus fragrans aurantiacus.
My 12’ small tree is blooming robustly over the side of the greenhouse this morning! I found myself secretly smiling over this good fortune. Its presence here offers joy for the receptive nose!

Hydrangea quercifolia shines on a fall day! With its lovely white blooms in early summer, its ability to take dryish shade and this fall color, makes it a great choice for gardeners with cold as well as warm weather!

One of the more unusual plants that I have flourishing in my garden. It blooms fuzzy lilac profusely in mid October to mid November. Rain does not daunt it! The flowers begin to drop as the leaves fall. The foliage smells of mint. Elsholtzia stauntonii is its name!
