There are ways patents can be used for good, see EA's (ironically) good open patents for techniques in making videos more accessible for those with different disabilities. But they chose to apply for them and make them open and license free, the patent office can't decide that.

Yeah that's a good point, but if this tech was so desired that people were genuinely buying Fords over other cars cause of it, then other manufacturers would have asked to license it from them. As it turns out, it wasn't that big a game changer. I used to have a ford but don't now and don't miss it.

Novel / inventive on parents can be the absolute bare minimum. I imagine the fact that the elements are smaller/spaced closer together/near invisible to the naked eye/passed crash test was probably enough to warrant a patent. (Source; was an automotive engineer)
