So you can’t just take <latitude extent> times <longitude extent> to compute this quantity, unlike in your living room, where you *can* take <wall length> times <other wall length> to compute the area of a rectangle.

The minor complication is that one square degree doesn’t correspond to one degree in longitude by one degree in latitude, because one degree in latitude covers a different distance depending on whether you are near the pole (one degree==short distance) or equator (one degree==long distance).

More or less, one degree squared corresponds to a square box that is one degree on a side—just like measuring area in your house or whatever, where we total up the number of one-foot by one-foot squares would cover the floors….
