It engages my players and gets them more excited and more invested into the game and world, and it eliminates a ton of prep work that I used to have to do. Their ideas become story events or points of interest or pieces of lore dumps. In general, this addition has turned this campaign into our best.

They then add in neighborhoods and factions and landmarks and history and npcs, and I brainstorm with them and carve those ideas to a more perfect fit to the setting. Often times I don't have to change anything. This has made running the game astronomically easier.

I've been teaching for a decade. Admittedly its teenagers, but the sweetest, kindest kids i teach almost universally have some life-altering trauma, illness, family issues etc. and they still show up daily with smiles and kindness. They keep me tethered to humanity after reading what our leaders do.
