My favorite picture from Angola, Indiana.
It’s a rural town of just over 9,000. (and I don’t need to tell anyone how Indiana votes, especially in rural areas) At least 300 showed up!

Angola, Indiana.
A town of just over 9,000 had at least 300 people. That’s nearly 5% in a rural community!

An Indivisible volunteer said they unofficial estimate was 10,000.

If you’re not serving chocolate for this holiday, do you realize our traditional meal is focused on foods that first grew here?
Although chocolate is from South America, it was so tasty that indigenous people traded the beans all the way north to at least Texas.
I made cocoa powder brownies.

Cranberry cheesecake bars were so good this year.
Of course I have to make cranberries. It’s one of the only foods of Thanksgiving that is actually native to my area (ish)

James Hemings’ macaroni pie.
This is the only dish I serve on Thanksgiving that doesn’t include food native to the Americas. It’s an honor to recognize the first celebrity chef on my Thanksgiving table. The brother of Sally was manumitted because of his skill as a chef.

My granny’s scalloped corn. It’s a Depression era dish with creamed corn, butter and saltines.
Thank you native farmers! Corn wouldn’t exist if people didn’t pull the kernels from the cob and plant them. Corn wouldn’t have survived evolution without our opposable thumbs.

My vegan marshmallows melted 😢
Sweet potatoes are native to the Americas. They are very similar to the African yam. When people were kidnapped from Africa and enslaved in the “New World”, they immediately recognized the sweet potato.
But sweet potatoes don’t care if you call them yams.

It’s time for appetizers!
My bean dip is actually 7 layers this year. 4 of those layers are foods native to North and Central America. Pinto beans, avocado, tomatoes and hot peppers.
The crackers are chestnuts and masa cornmeal, both indigenous foods.
