Two years ago, I heard that Taiwan's govt had unearthed surveillance files from the secret police of its authoritarian era. They were finally becoming open to the public, nearly four decades after Taiwan's democratisation. I wanted to see what was inside:

Wonder if Rwanda waiting till now to launch a major military action through M23 in the DRC is linked to knowing there’s no chance America will get involved

"Ants solving a geometric problem and it's amazing."

This is a great example of 'emergent phenomenon':
- None of the ants understand the problem they're solving.
- None of them can see the whole shape.
- A series of small decisions or rules add up to something with a new layer of complexity.

The Spiritual Strategic Retreat: a variation of the motte & bailey fallacy where the initial claim is measurable, testable, & falsifiable but when that position becomes untenable the claim morphs into a more spiritual, esoteric, and conspiratorial claim that is near impossible to (dis)prove

I think, in a decade or two, we will look at one of the impacts of social media is that it merged many strands of esotericism with fundamentalist Christianity. UFOs are demons, Atlantis is biblical, non-organic foods are spiritually unclean, etc.

This ridgeline plot and the unconventional use of shading from white to blue to indicate sea ice loss is great. It also reinforces the impression of a dense ice pack breaking up.

Let’s assume the new HTS-led govt in Syria reverts to a Salafist theocracy, the bad end state.

I don’t know whether it’s likely, but I do think it would quickly end. Syria has too many power players that HTS just cannot wield a monopoly of violence without widespread legitimacy.

Something to look out for: as the SDF makes gains in E. Syria, the likelihood of greater Turkish involvement looms in Syria, especially if the Assad govt keeps collapsing

Liberal Democracies around the world look to be in crisis or are stuck in an unending malaise, but thankfully the alternative options being implemented by other states look to be in even worse shape.
