In my grief, I neglected to acknowledge that without me asking, Sheila Colla wrote a powerful letter in support of me getting an Adjunct Professor appointment in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change at York University. I only learned about it from our friend and colleague Sarah Flicker ❤️

When I started researching wild bees, Sheila consistently offered advice. If I needed to vent about academic colleagues, I could count on her for a listening ear (& appropriate amount of justified anger!). When choosing between what is easy & what is right, I often think about what Sheila would do.

And I know that the impact she had on me was just a fraction of the impact she had on the people in her life and so many more beyond them. My heart breaks for all her loved ones, and especially for her husband Mark, and kids Tristan and Rowan.

I feel so fortunate to have met her 9 years ago, when she co-founded East Enders Against Racism in response to white supremacist posters at Stan Wadlow Park in East York. It was healing to have the opportunity to collaborate on such a response to racism in a park and community I grew up in.

That meant the world during the rocky transition when I asked myself daily “What have I done?” She was also the friend who eased my transition to my York postdoc, taking it upon herself to welcome me to the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change complete with a tour & access to the faculty lounge.
