“When you take a stand there might be a price to pay, and sometimes you have to pay that price.” Powerful message from my aunt Nurjehan Mawani based on her experience of our community’s inclusive schools challenging structural racism in Kenya @victoriaforum.bsky.social @uvic.ca #VictoriaForum #UViic

I’ve finally made it in Victoria. The bus driver waited for me at my stop when I was stuck waiting across the street at a red light, and then reassured me with “You’re ok, you’re ok” as I ran to catch it (not realizing he was waiting for me). Brings back memories of my East York home 😭.

Great to be at the launch of the Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada 2.0, that includes Health Equity and Social Justice as one of 10 categories of competencies. I’m especially glad to see understanding and addressing structural racism woven throughout the framework. #ph25sp #publichealth

I just hosted our UVic Faculty of Human & Social Development book club where we read @farzanadoctor.bsky.social’s 52 Weeks to a Sweeter Life. The consensus was that this is just the book we needed for ourselves and our students…years ago. #booksky #AcademicSky #52weeks

As I continue to question whether I made a good decision coming to UVic, it was nice to be in the Convocation faculty procession for the first time and cheer so many students (now alumni!) on. Congratulations to all for making it through the hurdles to get to this place in your journeys! 🎓🎉

I also *love* swimming. Swimming in Bondi Icebergs pool in Sydney, Australia last year was a dream come true. I embodied the metaphor of swimming against the current with waves crashing in. 🌊
