Alt text helps with people with low vision, screenreaders, it provides more context for later searches, it can explain a pic’s background info, and it helps filtering out muted keywords contained in the image.

If you’ve spoken to me, I love your content!
Everyone will caption the same image slightly differently, and that’s okay

The big thing is “what ideas were you conveying with the image? if the image doesn’t load, in a low-internet power setting, what was being represented? if someone can’t look at it right now, what would you want them to know”

It also is very helpful for people using muted keywords.

If you have a cockroach phobia, and mute cockroach, it is sad to see images of them when you didn’t want to see that.

Same with politicians faces!

It helps to think of it like captioning your images - so that people who cannot see can know what’s in the image, people with sight impairment can read the small or colorful fonts, and someone without pop culture knowledge can know WHO a celebrity is, when they have no clue.

Go to settings, accessibility, require alt text to turn it on!

Describe images, and include Texts seen in images

Your pfp might be alt-texted:

Person in navy blue jacket with blue and yellow floral print, bright yellow button-up, black tie, mouth closed smiling. Wearing they, them, theirs button.

Depends on what the purpose of the image is within the context of the post

The same image might be “picture of a lightswitch diagram” and then also be “connect this wire to that wire with this tool, then do this, then that”

same with a dress: red dress, or 1998 fall collection suede fabric details

this message would work best with alt-text added, which can be added as a feature by going to settings > accessibility > alt text.
Posts about “diversity makes us stronger” work best when the post is accessible to all: to those with vision issues, difficulty seeing text in images, screenreaders etc.

yes @erininthemorning.com can we get alt-text on your future posts. 💕

Not sure what the images are about, because there isn’t alt text on them.

Journalism should be accessible, and this post is not. 😔

Bsky.app/settings/accessibility to turn the setting on for your posts.

You’ve posted two images without it in just the past day (Most recent has it!)

You DO have the ability to write this post, about how much you dislike alt text talk.

You’re NOT someone who relies on alt text to see / interact with social media.

Call yourself an ableist, and get on with your day

Hashtags should be in smallCaseUpperCase or in UpperCaseUpperCase, so that they read as words.

All lower case hashtags are an illegible mess with no word breaks

If someone has a screen reader, they’ll benefit from your alt text that you submitted.

If they’re on their lunch break, or it’s midnight and they’re feeding a baby and can’t play sound, and need the video captioned, Bluesky doesn’t care at the moment.
Didn’t prioritize accessibility in that manner.

The audio alt text only plays correctly on screen readers, not for anyone else.

Bluesky is failing on accessibility when it comes to videos.

Alt text would be immensely helpful!

It’s easy to do from photos app, if using your phone

Pull up the picture like this one, highlight it and copy and paste the text directly from the screen of the photos app.

Takes 5 seconds, and makes the post searchable for better reach AND accessible to all.

glazing the art is going to be more useful, at least in the current moment.

prevents A I from slurping up the art style without permission, then respitting it out in plastic slop form.

You can set up the feature so it’s automatic at reminding you

Settings - Accessibility - alt text

For basic posting of non informational texts, it’s okay if it’s quick.

What essential image information do you want conveyed, if the image doesn’t load?

wishing you the best as well! 100%

this is more me standing on my soap box about the argument, not you as a person btw - you who already use ALT TEXT, and are also trying to do the right thing in the argument presented, just not noticing the double standard of writing texts v alt text you don’t use
December 18, 2024 at 1:39 AM
you also realize everything you text post is also being fed into A I, right?

so you do choose to post on public platforms which feeds A I, but disparage the piece that’s for accessibility.

that A I argument is an ableist one fundamentally, it sounds good and ominous, but it’s disability unfriendly
December 18, 2024 at 1:36 AM
The list is for my sake, honestly. As I don’t want to see meme images without alt text.

Big accounts that aren’t alt texting aren’t accessible, and I want that off my feed.
December 17, 2024 at 8:00 PM
Here’s a list to help you (people should be distrustful of lists)

But I absolutely agree with you that Bluesky @bsky.app is failing on accessibility in a lot of ways with alt text.

It should be toggle-on sign up

and people should be able to bypass textless images (due to triggers, and or vision)
December 17, 2024 at 7:58 PM
And I’m ready to get “the good guys” off this list, but they’ve been informed about alt text on the site and are still not making their information accessible to their followers. That’s an accessibility choice.

What are some names on the list you think I should focus on getting disability-friendly?
December 12, 2024 at 2:17 PM
or alt text!

this list is all big accounts who don’t alt text (checked 2-3 posts of theirs before adding them)

a lot of those political posters ended up on the list as they’re posting their ragebait memes, or partisan team politic takes, but with no alt text anywhere.
