I think they did eventually, but originally, because they were somehow rated U, some went out uncut. Very young me was somewhat traumatised by the pre-credits sequences of e.g. Diamonds Are Forever and Live and Let Die. I can remember noticing that these had been trimmed in later screenings.

When Channel 5 launched, a key selling point was that they weren’t going to interrupt their films with the news, but the problem was that all the films they had were absolute shit.

*young people will never know the joy of ITV starting a Bond at 8pm, its runtime bloated to due to ads, and then interrupting it at 10pm for half an hour of the contractually obliged News at Ten then 10 minutes of local news and weather, then showing the last half hour of the film at 1040.

Apparently there is a whole subculture of American men who don’t wipe their bottoms because it might ‘make them gay.’ It’s one of things I am most annoyed at the internet for making me aware of.

I used to counter this by sneakily reading the first 30 pages or so of my next book in the couple of days before I’d finished the previous one, ensuring a seamless transition to a book already in progress.
