he image depicts how the studies are plotted along the futures cone (sensu Voros 2003), adopting a well-known visual heuristic. Numbers indicate the total number of publications (more publications equal larger bubble sizes) and the colours correlate with the type of future scenarios developed (Purple: Preferable, Black: Projected, Blue: Plausible, Green: Possible, Yellow: Preposterous). The placement of bubbles along the x-axis does not suggest a timeline, nor does it suggest that studies are more or less anticipatory (distant to the present). Combined colour bubbles refer to studies that develop more than one type of scenario. The publications marked in yellow adopt other terms (speculative, alternative, dreamed or radical) that make them explorative and potentially closer to preposterous futures although not stated explicitly.
