Thrilled to share that the Palgrave Handbook on the 2024 EP Election is finally out! 🤩

Martin Dolezal and I co-authored the #Austria chapter on the rise of the #FPÖ, voter disaffection, and mapping 🇦🇹 and 🇪🇺 parties in the 2D policy space via #manifestoberta.

Had a phenomenal time at the 1st ever Extremism & Democracy SG Conference #SGED25 in London — taking lots of new ideas and inspiration home. Really enjoyed @kai-arzheimer.com’s keynote reflecting on the field and history of the SG since its inception in 1999. Already looking forward to #SGED27!

Hello #PolSky! 👋

What are your favorite non-journal sources for research inspiration? What are you reading or listening to these days? 🎧📚

Think blogs, podcasts, newsletters — anything accessible and rigorous that helps spark ideas. Bonus points if it’s great for #teaching in political science! 💡

In the US, it’s the “woketopus”, a supposed deep-state cabal pulling the strings. In Germany, Markus Söder claims that NGOs have “spread like octopuses” in Green party-led ministries.

Different country, same playbook.

Leaving #Canberra and heading back home to Austria (sadly, no kangaroos there). My #visiting #fellowship has been incredibly rewarding—great conversations, new friendships, and plenty of ideas to take home. Grateful to #ANU for the support that made this possible. Hope to be back in the future!

Populist attitudes moderate perceptions, but not as expected:

❌ They don’t amplify the effect of policy shifts on low perceived commitment.

💡 Instead, non-populists judge parties by their actions, while populists—more skeptical of political motives—are less responsive to these distinctions.

✔️ Baseline finding: Voters see pivots toward a competitor’s position as less committed (=policy direction).

✔️ But policy area matters: Reinforcing or shifting *core* policies is seen as a genuine signal of commitment. Manipulation of *peripheral* positions isn’t.

A prime example: Austria’s ÖVP under S. Kurz back in 2017.

Rather than cherry-picking #FPÖ’s claims around preserving national values, #ÖVP also framed migration as a threat to job market and economic sovereignty—a break from its market-liberal tradition.

Policy alignment isn’t everything, though. It misses a crucial point: voters don’t just take policy claims at face value!

I argue that voters can discern whether an in-party’s behavior reflects 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 or mere strategic positioning out of 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

Thrilled to speak at #ANU School of Politics & IR this Thursday about my recent #EJPR article! I’ll be discussing how voter loyalty and opportunities shape parties’ policy priorities.

Highly recommend this one for its insights—but also for its spice! 🌶️

Despite overwhelming evidence that “policy accommodation” often falls short, political leaders keep making the same choices. Why?

A brilliant read from @philswatton.bsky.social 👇

Zu diesem Thema kann ich übrigens auch dieses Interview mit @tabouchadi.bsky.social sehr empfehlen, erschienen nach der Bundestagswahl 2021. 👇

In the US, #Trump v. US has blurred lines btw. POTUS and nat. interest. Now, science bends to political loyalty—papers are scrubbed of banned terms, grant reviews frozen, self-censorship spreads. Meanwhile, in AT, #FPÖ wants research in German only, and in DE, #Lindner and #Merz flirt with Trumpism.

Also, a big shoutout to Brandon Yoder for generously letting me use his office while he’s overseas!

Don’t worry, Brandon—I’ll keep your desk organized and resist the urge to redecorate. 😏

Excited to share that I’ve started my #VisitingFellowship at ANU in Canberra! 🌏📚
It’s only been a week, but I’ve already had some great conversations with amazing scholars here. Looking forward to meeting more colleagues, learning about their brilliant work, and collaborating with them in future.

Teaching isn’t just presenting new info — it also means creating an environment where students feel comfortable figuring things out and making mistakes. So, end-of-year student emails like this one are rewarding and show how important it is to build confidence and curiosity in the classroom.

This year, I’ve had the privilege of teaching in the first-ever cohort of MSc #Digital #International #Affairs at the Diplomatic Academy, Vienna.

Learning stats & programming can be daunting, but it’s been amazing to see my students rise to the challenge.
