If you use gloves, the police will be able to smell the methyl chloride propellant on them.

Use a rigid non-porous item or carry multiple sets of heat-proof gloves.

I remember a thing about put traffic cones over tear gas cannisters and then water them. Also, you can easily make shields out of plastic garbage can lids.

And never wear shirts/shoes/hats with logos. For shoes, gaffer’s tape over distinctive marks/logos.
