#NowPlaying Janelle Monáe - The Archandroid (2010) New to me following a reccomendation on here. An RnB concept album stretching over 70 minutes ranging from the funk of Tightrope to the bubbling, effervescent pop thrill of Wondaland via corale breather '57821'. Promising first play. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums7074 Augustus Pablo - This Is Augustus Pablo (1974) There is nothing to match the sound of a melodica with heavy reverb and Pablo cornered the market. Instrumental rock steady with heavy dub, which sets a relaxed mood as the sun sets here. Innovative. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums7074 #albumoftheday New York Dolls - New York Dolls (1973) Raucous rock from the most polarising band in history. They may look as if they'd raided mom's wardrobe and makeup box and would have been a joke if the songs and performance hadn't been so strong. Best track - Trash #NowPlaying

#5debutalbums7074 Mick Ronson - Slaughter On 5th Avenue (1974) An eclectic album for a man recently cast adrift. A wide mixture of influences from Elvis to Bowie himself. Great guitar work, pretty strong voice. Love Me Tender is an odd opening track. Best track - Hey Ma, Get Papa #NowPlaying

#NowPlaying #5debutalbums7074 Be Bop Deluxe - Axe Victim (1974) Second run out in a month for this Bowiesque incarnation of BBD. Not as strong as later albums but has its blues rock moments. The guitar soloing is next level. Best track - Jet Silver & The Dolls Of Venus. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums7074 #albumoftheday Roxy Music - Roxy Music (1972) Free form pop music. All the musicians soloing like threads weaving in and out forming stunning material. Primitive yet the height of sophistication. Excellent debut. Best track - Would You Believe #NowPlaying #MusicSky

#albumoftheday #5debutalbums7074 T. Rex - S/T (1970) Breakthrough album for the band on the back of Ride A White Swan. Dreamy folk slowly becoming more electrified. Marc can taste the fame he craves. Three years at the absolute pinnacle begins. Best track - One Inch Rock #NowPlaying

#5debutalbums7074 Bill Nelson - Northern Dream (1971) Debut solo album from this virtuoso guitarist. As notable for the fact it was self financed as much as the stylistically diverse but mainly folky blues rock contents. A pastoral troubadour strumming his way from village to town.

#5debutalbums7074 Sparks - Sparks (1971) Released under the name Halfnelson, but, hey, this is Sparks. Witty, quirky pop music searching for an audience. Todd Rungren produced a bright and lively debut. This isn't just art rock. This is Salvador Dali art rock. #NowPlaying #MusicSky

#5debutalbums7074 Queen - Queen (1973) It's all here; overdubbed guitars, falsetto, the suites, baroque orchestral touches, etc but it's all a bit formative on this debut. But there's a sense of irresistible inevitability about their eventual stardom. Get out of the way! #NowPlaying #MusicSky

#5debutalbums7074 Slade - Play It Loud (1970) I recently bought a collection and this was one of very few keepers. Pre-glam Slade confidently produce bluesy hard rock sounding, in places, not unlike fellow Midlanders, Sabbath. Best track - The Shape Of Things To Come #NowPlaying #MusicSky
November 27, 2025 at 4:31 PM
#5debutalbums7074 Paul McCartney - McCartney (1970) A relaxed and happy Macca on show here. Some of the songs are little more than well developed sketches, but this is the sound of a depressurised genius at play. Maybe I'm Amazed is a belter. #NowPlaying #MusicSky

#5debutalbums7074 #albumoftheday Brian Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets (1974) Accessible avant garde pop music. Vocally, a cousin to Russell Mael. Musically, way ahead of its time. Complex, layered arrangements make for a rewarding listen every time you play it. Best track - Baby's On Fire #NowPlaying

#5debutalbums7074 Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - The Human Menagerie (1973) A debut of darkest, baroque burlesque infused rock. For a first record it is stunningly confident and strides flamboyantly across the stage until the 9 minute closing opus - Death Trip. #NowPlaying #MusicSky
November 26, 2025 at 10:38 PM
#5debutalbums7074 Bryan Ferry - These Foolish Things (1973) Ferry must have been living in the studio in 73. Two amazing Roxy releases and this covers album. He rattles through 13 tracks with a light touch and obvious affection for Dylan and soul/RnB. #NowPIaying #MusicSky

#5debutalbums7074 #albumoftheday Curtis Mayfield - Curtis (1970) Is there a better solo debut than this? Mayfield calls out politicians for their lies and lack of empathy. Plus ça change.... Excellent social soul, speaking truth unto power. Best track - Move On Up #NowPlaying #MusicSky

#5debutalbums7074 Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (1973) Leaving aside the fact that he made Richard Branson a millionaire and household name, it's worth remembering that Oldfield was just 19 years old when this innovative instrumental classic was recorded. I was busy retaking my A levels. #NowPlaying

#5debutalbums7074 Oboade - Kpanlogo Party (1973) Ghanaian street drum music recorded live - in London with sleeve notes by an Oxford professor of Social Anthropology! It was a very different time! The music remains absolutely infectious. Mustapha Tettey Addy takes centre stage #NowPlaying #MusicSky
November 25, 2025 at 3:57 PM
#5debutalbums7074 The Baby Huey Story - The Living Legend (1971) Sadly not an original. A Curtis Mayfield protégé with an astounding voice that just about got his chaotic life together to record most of this album before succumbing to his demons. Amazing soul music! Incredible story! #NowPlaying

#5debutalbums7074 #albumoftheday Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill (1972) Tightly crafted, yet laid back soft rock compositions with country and jazz tinges. The band that 10CC could have been. Best track - Do It Again #NowPlaying #MusicSky
November 25, 2025 at 3:04 PM
#5debutalbums7074 The Vulcans - Startrek (1972) Very early space age ska/reggae. In truth a shameless Trojan moog cash in but it's a mighty fine record. This copy sounds like it's been roughed up with a cheese grater but still sounds so bassy. Tangerine Dream meet Sly & Robbie. #NowPlaying #MusicSky

#5debutalbums7074 #albumoftheday 10CC - 10CC (1973) Harking back to the doo-wop and rock & roll of the 50's, its easy to dismiss this as a pastiche of a bygone era. 10CC don't have the reverence afforded to their peers but this LP is full of clever, knowing references and satire. Best track - Donna
