5 days later and we’re at 50% germination rate! For dahlia seeds I harvested for the first time! Each one of these is gonna be a new plant that maybe has never existed before??

Last fall I harvested a bunch of dahlia seeds and last weekend I got them started and I was pretty sure nothing would come of it because they all looked green and sad, but lo! Today a seedling has appeared!!

waffle iron update: I bought two (one for me and one for my mom) only to learn my mom believes she still has my grandmother’s, somewhere (rude). We had waffles for breakfast yesterday and they did indeed live up to my internal hype.

everything is really a lot right now, but a while back I had a puzzle made from a photo I took of a dahlia I grew and last night I finally finished putting it all together

Today I learned piebald deer are a thing? This little friend showed up in my yard and hung out for a bit.
A small deer, about the size of a goat. It’s mostly white, with some brown spots and patches on its forehead and side. The same small white deer, this time with its head down nibbling some grass. It looks like a bull terrier with long legs. The same deer, facing the camera this time. Its ears are a much darker brown and at this angle they look a bit like horns, making it look more like a goat than a deer.

Coda has been sick and out of sorts for the past week, but she finally seems to be on the mend (she ate! for the first time since Sunday!!) and I’m just so, so relieved.

(here she is yesterday after the third of four vet visits in the last 8 days 🙃)

so dahlia season is off to a pretty good start here in maine
