It's an underrated gem. Husband and I quote it endlessly. (Thornton: "Don't you want to get to know me?" McDormand: "Why? Does it get better?") I think it grabbed me at the time because I grew up in the general area where it's set and they nailed the weird vibe of that part of California.

Turns out the primary attribute needed to get obscenely rich is a desire to get obscenely rich without caring about the ethics or logistics of doing so.

I guess the Gen X equivalent of this was me in 1988 saying "why can't we just be friends with the Soviets" at the dinner table and my parents born in the 1920/30s putting down their forks and saying "how much time you got?"

I believe it was Malcolm X who observed that the difference between a Southern racist and a Northern racist is that when a Southern racist bared his teeth to you there was no mistaking it for a smile. Wolves vs. foxes, conservatives vs. liberals.
