Diane Keaton was, far and away, my favorite actress in my "formative years." Annie Hall, Manhattan, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Shoot the Moon, Mrs. Soffel, Reds, Marvin's Room. She displayed a neurotic, naked vulnerably that I adored. A very, very sad day. Thank you Miss Keaton.

Mark Brokaw has died. We worked together five times (3 production of The Lyons). He was a brilliant director and my dear friend. Funny, smart, kind and the epitome of class. He loved the theater and I loved him. The world feels very different to me today, emptier and sadder. Thank you, Mark.

What am I doing in Spain? Ascending the throne, of course.

One of the oddest & most amusing things in Madrid is this store, Surprise Box. (I think it’s a chain.) They sell undelivered mystery packages. They're all in white plastic bags and you pay by weight.Crazy huh? I mean you might get a diamond ring (I doubt it) or a dozen kitchen sponges (more likely).

Looking at the Oscar nominations-- while there are a couple of films there that I genuinely loved, mostly I am reminded that this is ABSOLUTELY no longer my culture.

I've been to The Prado! One is not allowed to take photos in The Prado. (Who knew?) I took these before I was stopped, dragged to a tiny room, frisked, interrogated, fingerprinted and beaten bloody with a nightstick. (In truth I was very politely informed of the rule.)

Linda Lavin has died and the world is abruptly darker. I did two plays with Linda. Always present, always alive, always connected in a profound way. Linda could find the pain in any joke, and she could find the joke in any pain. She was pure genius and I thought she would live forever.

Two friends from Russia came over and watched It's a Wonderful Life-- they'd never seen it. As I do every year, I cried my eyes out! (One thing I'd never really noticed before is that I think it would be so much more fun to live in Potterville than Bedford Falls! Sign me up.)
