Shifting old Zine-O-Matic subscription col’n from jumble in a cupboard to under-the-bed storage bin.
BUT,
going to go through them all soon, find faves, then think of a way to store/display best o’ the best in our living room…hmmm….
A large, low profile black tote (for sliding under a bed frame) with zipper-open top slid back and to the side to reveal rows/stacks of large mailing manila-style envelopes (in standard yellowy-orange or in either grey-blue or neon green), each featuring the Zino-O-Matic logo over a bizarro jam-packed doodle of tons of cartoony weird faces of people, animals, monsters.

I swear I could stock a fairly stellar personal library collection for a kid just from very funky books that Wide Eyed/Quarto puts out…
This is a very engaging #scienterrific insect book; fact-packed; great text; cool facts (not only standard fare); fab layouts; cool art!

PM #StoryStudio w/ K class: using #LooseParts to build any story they wished, perhaps inspired by our outdoor learning field trips into nature, but open to anything…extremely well-focussed, totally engaged, great at being both storytellers/listeners, fantastic at clean-up.

This morning in the library:
A squirrelly Gr 1 group came w/ a replacement teacher (so were extra wild), but got somewhat focussed once building their #LooseParts treasure map stories…then, turns as listener/storyteller…but, not so sure that major quality happened for this #StoryStudio session…
A double table set up with a bunch of loose parts bins on one side and two brown construction paper placemats the other side, each with a treasure map scene built out of loose parts—two storytellers are narrating their stories to two listeners. (Though amount of listening was dubious; stories for most seemed barely there; last session with this group was much better.) Tables and rolling bookshelves pushed aside to also create some floor space for building stories. Wow! The gatefold (?) in the middle of the story…a huge, four-page, upward foldout is quite spectacular (though I’ll need to do some creative strengthening processing before putting it into kids hands hands).

My latest #RecodeTheBarcode funkiness: On this book, the barcode just *has* to be broken too (functional one in top left corner).
Cover photo of X. Noticed lately that our #makerspace books weren’t circulating, so…display, display, displayed them, book talked them today for several classes; replenished each session; also gave out Illustoria mags as bonus books to artsy kids to encourage future checkouts of those fab things

In today’s math #LEGOwall follow-up, *a Gr 2* (yesterday had a talk-to-text error) class added builds with addition math sentences… for someone who wanted to make it trickier, I asked them to create some sort of repeating colour pattern around the edge…

It’s like a rabbit hole stream of consciousness evolved from musing on the modern trend of calling an aficionado of things a ___-head (sneakerhead, etc)…gone amok.
It’s a wild, charming world full of zany humour…

Today in the library: Gr 1s were doing #LooseParts creations of settings, with two chosen plastic animals, then making up oral stories with those characters…share story with at least one other student, then we took photos, which will be printed later for writing out their stories in class tomorrow.
A bunch of loose parts building items laid out on a table in their separate bins: plastic shapes blocks, straws and connecters, pipe cleaners, gems that are clear or green or blue, little rolls of burlap, twigs and wooden sticks, etc… More loose parts, bins: popsicle sticks, ribbons of different sizes and colors, little wooden nonrepresentational people like figures, clothes pins, Cuisenaire rods, etc. A close-up of one kids loose parts setting-– it’s built on an 11 x 17 sheet of construction paper, which is what we used to contain their scene so it doesn’t spread so far that no one else can build —with other kids’ story scenes spread out on the floor nearby. A few from above of two kid heads, leaning in as one tells their animal story to the other – afterwards, they switch roles, storyteller and listener.

Excellent narrative nonfiction: It’s #scienterrific with its great front & back matter, mini visual timeline at bottoms of pages; charts evolution from POV of titular Stalactite & Stalagmite; plus, has a #SecretCover; and now is part of my #RecodeTheBarcode series.

Yesterday, the new Crochet Club, which was going to meet in the host teacher’s classroom, but has gotten too large, met here in the Library instead…and I’ve given them the extended invitation to always meet here.

Photo of the front cover of the zine I mentioned, which is called Making Faces, a collage portrait zine by Christopher Hunt. The title is done in cut and pasted letters, ransom note style. The central image is of one of the collage faces I made years ago. It features a pale green and beige, striped piece of paper ripped into a vague face shape; glued onto it are other facial features, ripped or cut from various other fancy papers. The eyes are created with old frames for slides with a picture of an eyeball mounted behind one and a swirling circular design like a vinyl record behind the other… And so on. Wow! My nerves are wracked…but, in a good way…?

I just completed my first-ever submission: Two of my microfiction pieces.

Big learning curve. Still figuring things out. Exciting to get started though.

The grand prize winner of The Mikey is automatically nominated for Best Small Fictions and any other prize we deem appropriate. In addition, we will pay the grand prize winner $1000. Second place: $500. Third place $300. Finalists: $100. All finalists and placers will be published in the December ’25 issue of SmokeLong. Previously published as well as previously unpublished work will be considered.

I’ve been a K-5 librarian for a long time.
We’ve often relied on dollar store baskets/bins for saving money.
But, whether those or school/library suppliers, tons of hard plastic bins are/get brittle over time, don’t stand up to rigours of kids pulling them out, slamming back into shelves…
So…see ALT
These are the Rubbermaid roughneck tote bins I started switching to years ago. I buy the smallest size, maybe their 3 gallon ones? They’re at every hardware store here in BC, Canada…I think they’re ubiquitous in the U.S. too? They fit well on standard library shelves, whether stored long side or short side facing out. They aren’t as nice looking and I wish they came in snazzy colours rather than just navy-ish blue. But, they never die. Still using the same ones I bought 12 years ago to house softcover picture books. Every year, I switch more series novels, special groupings of books into these tubs as the other bins crack, disintegrate…(esp any clear plastic bins—they are super brittle). Alas, the lids for these tubs aren’t needed, but I’ve got a stack that gets repurposed from time to time as paint palettes or art supply holders (for flatter things like paper product pieces, popisicle sticks, stickers, etc) for art projects…which can be quickly, loosely stacked and moved. Sorry…I’m incapable of giving anything but an overly thorough reply…Hope it’s useful.
