Even the most epic asshole has moments in which, or people to whom, they are not an asshole, not even a smidgeon. Conversely, even the most kindhearted person is capable of being an asshole when the wind turns a certain way. So it was with Bobby Erskine of Clarksdale Crossroads, California. A straight-A student at Clarksdale Crossroads Intermediate, he sang in the choir at the Jamison United Methodist Church and sold popcorn with Troop 0443. He was, by all accounts, a good and dependable boy of twelve. He was no saint, but neither was he much of a sinner.
His earPods were delivering Green Day’s “American Idiot” at 112 decibels as he struggled to tip the top pallet onto the stack. He pushed and twisted to square them into a proper tower. He thought they looked cool when aligned, so he arranged them into a nearly perfect wind tunnel. Then he found the mason jar of paint thinner.
Bobby’s older brother, Ernest, who was working after school at the nearby big-box hardware store, had hidden a stash of illegal fireworks in the barn. Bobby knew he wouldn’t have an opportunity to light them when Ernest was around until at least the Fourth—over a month away. When the vision of setting all those pallets ablaze with a volley of fireballs from a roman candle popped into his head that afternoon, Bobby knew he had to seize the day. Carpe diem.

For Halloween, a longish snippet from THE AURORA'S PALE LIGHT, a ceremony that takes place on this special night. (Purchase link in the bio).
“Thank you for gathering on this important night. There are only a few such nights in our calendar, and we only gather when the One is found. It is an honor, of course, but also a profound responsibility. When the stars and the moon are in their place, those marked must join the Pentaculum and witness. This allows the Pentacula to continue, grow, and replenish itself. It provides meaning to those who wander blindly in the world, their eyes sewn shut by trauma, ignorance, and fear.”
He raised his head and acknowledged all the congregants. “Let us begin.”
Six stepped to his place at the head of the Pentacle, his feet on the black tile VI. From there, the One’s head was within easy reach. The hairy man’s eyes only now started to reveal any anxiety.
Six leaned over and whispered, “There, there.” He straightened and spoke more formally to all. “We gather according to the Wheel of the Year. This gathering of the Six on Samhain’s Eve is a particularly potent aspect of the Wheel. So, we gather here, when the veils between the worlds are thin, to aid the One, to bring him to the one, pure, white light.” He leaned down and retrieved a leather strap attached to the underside of the ancient altar. Six gently strapped the One’s head to the altar as the other congregants stepped forward and found straps beneath the altar as well. They quietly and gently secured each of his limbs. Melissa’s position as Three gave her the right leg to secure, and a view of the One’s groin, which was so hairy that his penis was shrunken from view. There was no escape now. The One’s breathing increased in speed and volume. The reality of his situation was becoming clear. It was at this moment that Melissa often felt the need to stifle a laugh. She remembered this point in her induction, remembered the panic rising. What happened next was less clear. Her ceremony had lasted nine hours, they told her later. She had needed three months to recover physically.
Six turned from the altar and selected something from the table near the wall. He turned back, holding a twelve-inch blade. It was not wavy or serpentine or overly theatrical; however, any casual observer could see it was sharpened to perfection. The One began to pant hoarsely.
“No. Nope. I’ve changed my mind,” he said. He sounded like a dreamer, talking in his sleep. “I didn’t think it was real, I thought—”
Six slid the blade into the trembling flesh just above the One’s pectoralis major, entering the skin below the collarbone and moving toward the navel, between the muscle and dermis. Blood poured out of the wound and matted the black chest hair. The One howled, and his mouth filled with spittle. Suddenly, he was crying and struggling against his bonds. With an experienced hand, Six plunged the knife in to its hilt and removed it while the One convulsed.
The congregants felt the first rush of adrenaline as they each remembered their own trauma. None of them felt an ounce of sympathy or pity. Their eyes shone with wonder, fascination, and joy. Their hearts beat almost audibly in unison.
Six turned to wipe the blade on a rag. The One caught his breath.

Whoever it is sounds panicked. “Alright. We’ll dress and be there as quickly as possible.” Adam closes the door and pulls off his robe. “You’d better wake up, Seph.” “What is it?” “There’s been a murder.” “Excellent!”

A Goodreads review of THE DENT IN THE UNIVERSE: October 26, 2025 Best new time travel idea ever! Marcus Stunning! I've read a lot of time travel stories. This is by far the most unique I've read in a long time. Takes a bit to get going but its worth it. And be forewarned, the gruesome, bloody details are somewhat graphic (verging on S.King territory). But overall, I give it my highest recommendation. Cant wait for part 2. Get it!
