Hot take: The way some people on here talk about mutual aid as if it should be a replacement for government aid programs is just the evangelical, "churches should do charity not the government," but for atheists. It's a fundamentally right wing way of understanding how the world works.

Here's the thing: whenever someone who's done a bunch of punching down is like "I'm not transphobic/racist/antisemitic/misogynist/etc., I'm just misanthropic!" you need to look at how often they punch down vs. up/across.
