Aspiring author of DEER LAKE, a locked-estate mystery/family saga. Currently querying.
Pinned
A severe thunderstorm closes the bridge to the country house where Dr Leslie Dimaano and her godson Buddy are staying. After finding the caretaker unconscious, Buddy searches for the assailant but discovers an ominous sign from his past. DEER LAKE is a 90k-word gothic suspense thriller #querying
I'm guilty of the very grave sin of telling not showing. My story becomes an essay whenever I need the reader to understand certain viewpoints. Then I remembered the oyster divers in the Tangerines show and realized, "Oh sh*t they're a Greek Chorus and that's exactly what they're for." #writing

I thought I was halfway but I'm actually a third of the way editing my manuscript after I decided to go back to a three-act structure. The subplot about the MC's family history has been confined to Act 2, and Act 3 returns to the relative present. This is what I get for pantsing #writing

Got a really nice rejection (I hope) from F0LI0 Literary saying I should keep them in mind in case I have another manuscript 🥲

I'm reading my first Cormac McCarthy novel, 'The Passenger'. Like most award-winning authors, I'd come to expect him to be somewhat impenetrable. So I was a bit upset after reading the first 25 pages and thinking, "Why didn't anyone tell me this was going to be so much fun?"

One of my mistakes as a newbie novelist was expecting someone who was writing in another genre to understand my intentions and impose the expectations of their genre on my book.
