By 1997, most whales were singing either the old or the new song—some even used intermediate songs blending both. By 1998, the switch was complete: all males were singing the new song. This new song wasn’t random. It was nearly identical to the song of whales from the west coast of Australia.

Between 1995-1998, researchers recorded over 1,000 hours of humpback whale songs off southeast Queensland. In 1996, they noticed two singers out of 82 with a completely different song, unlike anything heard before.
