During breeding, male humpback whales sing long, complex songs for sexual display. This study investigated how sonar affected their singing behavior. They record whale songs before, during, and after sonar transmissions. The sonar lengthens their songs temporarily.

Humpback whale songs evolve over time, but what if a few “foreign singers” could spark a complete cultural revolution in song patterns across an entire population? That’s exactly what happened off the east coast of Australia.
