TRAIN DREAMS is a moving adaptation from dir. Clint Bentley & lead Joel Edgerton. It celebrates the extraordinary nature of ordinary life — reflecting how we connect to nature, each other, & the world around us. Somehow tragic & uplifting, with one of the year’s best closing shots. #filmsky

IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT is easily one of the year’s best. Jafar Panahi unfurls a dark mystery with laughs, propulsive action, and a fantastic ensemble. A complex and weighty moral dilemma with steady rising tension culminates in one of the year’s (decade’s?) very best endings. A must see. #filmsky

WAKE UP DEAD MAN is a return to form in the Knives Out franchise — a delightfully twisty whodunnit, riffing on the impossible murder subgenre. Josh O’Connor gives maybe my favorite performance of the franchise. Even if Rian Johnson never tops the original, he’s still earned 5+ sequels ASAP. #filmsky

IF I HAD LEGS I’D KICK YOU — a new headliner for the cult of bleak cinema. Rose Byrne is remarkable. Director Mary Bronstein lays bare a deeply personal story. It’s tremendously upsetting, but expertly balanced by the humor and weight of its undersung message. A must-see for 2025. #filmsky

THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE is Amanda Seyfried’s career best. She expertly blends frenetic, maternal energy that turned Lee prophet to a fascinating movement. Mona Fastvold uncovers rapturous highs & the solemn dark side of Lee’s mission. Beautifully captured & (unfortunately) deeply resonant in 2025

Bill Condon’s KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN is unfortunately a massive flop. The 3 leads give solid performances, & some of Lopez’s musical numbers really shine. But they can’t overcome a script that feels woefully dated & regressive, masquerading as the polar opposite. A huge miss.

ROOFMAN is a down the middle crowd pleaser. Kirsten Dunst is extraordinary like always, Channing Tatum is very charming, & the wild true story will certainly draw some in. It’s source prevents any real surprises though, w/ a predictable, flat conclusion. Fun but immediately forgettable.

Need to know if @jowrotethis.bsky.social and Mallory will be discussing The First Shadow in their Stranger Things lead-up coverage. Great show with big lore implications!

WARFARE is harrowing. Alex Garland leans into his CIVIL WAR sensibilities to painstakingly retell a specific, intense 90min of co-director Ray Mendoza’s time as Navy SEAL. It’s honest & visceral on what soldiers face, the flawed responses, & the inevitable chasm of destruction in their wake #filmsky

MICKEY 17 is an outlandish satire that expertly deploys Robert Pattinson in his funniest role(s) yet. More OKJA than PARASITE, but still a light culmination of Bong Joon-ho’s career: absurdist class commentary, chaotic, high stakes crime, adorable gross creatures, macaron slander—what’s not to love?

HEART EYES is a fantastic time at the movies. Holiday romcom + slasher horror collide in a revelatory genre mashup. Laughs, swoons, scares, what more could you want? Mason Gooding & Olivia Holt are incredibly charming. HEK mask & kills are sick. The ending is fittingly absurd. Loved it! #filmsky

COMPANION is a blast. Sophie Thatcher delivers a remarkable lead performance that holds together a story about technology, dependency, and the folly of our preconceived notions.

A perfect date night movie — sit back, squirm, laugh, and discuss.

OBEX is bonkers. It finds comedy & fantasy in the mundane as a homebody is thrown into a dangerous video game to rescue his dog. As a big TUX & FANNY fan, I missed some heart that I know Albert Birney is capable of. Immediate cult status for some, but too flat & austere for me. #Sundance #filmsky

SORRY, BABY is an astounding debut by Eva Victor — shedding her online persona for a richer, layered turn as a woman dealing with ups & downs of life.

Heartbreaking, funny, authentic, & far more nuanced than most films w/ a similar story. A new filmmaker has announced herself! #Sundance #filmsky
