Living room floor Degas dancer chin. Eyes trained from the pillow to the blinking TV. Unwavering. Flat chest strained upwards. Wonder if it would split in half neatly, like a piece of fruit, or come crumbling into hands like bread. Christ. Pomegranates, you would imagine. Really? Who would imagine the heart of a girl breaking in two right there on the living room floor? Cartoons turned up to blasting. Everything is so loud from the moment we come slicked into the hands of a stranger. Mother lying there in the pose of a dead and roasted chicken. I almost said that it would be white. The room, I mean. Thinking back, it was probably magnolia. Or blue, but a sickly kind. The colour of medical gloves. Latex. Astonishment when the rubber snaps. Copies of fallow in the window of books upstairs

You know how easy it is to crack—call it a woman’s intuition. Of course the plates must be empty. The attempt rightfully in the bin. The man will laugh and call you an idiot because you tried to make breakfast— imagine, an anorexic with a talent for abundance! Remember your mother never taught you how to cook though she did try. You were too busy dipping a wet fingertip into the flour making a secret of your tongue.

July 7th The night I try to kill myself Pope Francis is in Ecuador praising its singular beauty while I alone from the bridge see the night in two colours and imagine that I am one of them reflected in the river below. He speaks of Galapagos, of rain forests, of thanking God for wonders that we could only hope to destroy. Mid-speech the wind whips his white skullcap away and for once it seems he is ordinary after all; bald-headed, almost a father, the church a gentle thing in his pocket. My own life hangs over me like a rosary bead; I feel myself in my mother’s hands warm from prayer and turning over back to the street think that I will call her tomorrow.

A forever favourite Bishop 🐦
Five Flights Up Still dark. The unknown bird sits on his usual branch. The little dog next door barks in his sleep inquiringly, just once. Perhaps in his sleep, too, the bird inquires once or twice, quavering. Questions—-if that is what they are—- answered directly, simply, by day itself. Enormous morning, ponderous, meticulous; gray light streaking each bare branch, each single twig, along one side, making another tree, of glassy veins… The bird still sits there. Now he seems to yawn. The little black dog runs in his yard. His owner's voice arises, stern, "You ought to be ashamed!" What has he done? He bounces cheerfully up and down; he rushes in circles in the fallen leaves. Obviously, he has no sense of shame. He and the bird know everything is answered, all taken care of, no need to ask again. —-Yesterday brought to today so lightly! (A yesterday I find almost impossible to lift.)

Heart rot of the pine for Mícheál McCann It's the cafés that will save us. I'm talking to the new barista. He's got a two-faced cat. From this angle she looks like someone else. The illusion of having more than one thing to love like flipping a gold coin and always winning. He feeds her fresh fish. The shorter a creature lives, the more expensive its life. Make her feel your love while she can, anything else would be cruel. For you or the cat, I ask. Sorry? He's remaking the coffee, wasn't happy with the first pour. This is the type of guy who thinks we have time to try again. It's a Saturday morning so I might forgive him for it. Maybe because he thinks I'm local when I'm not. He grew up on this street so it's only natural for him to die here in his grandmother's house. They had to cut down her tree outside, some infection or other. He's not sure how to explain it, only words like bark, branch, wound come out as the steam rises. It's in the heart, he says. I never knew trees had hearts, that they soften. Break
