When I was in high school, in the depths of the Reagan years, my school was literally visited by two fake “Soviet officers” who harangued us for an hour or so in the most obnoxious possible way on the glories of socialism and the USSR. Probably the weirdest thing I ever experienced in school.

Maybe, but 50 years ago you could have said precisely the same thing about core Democratic identity in the south. Party identification is not immutable. Of course the cynical view is that the one thing that runs deeper than party is white supremacy.
