Capitalizing on his victory, Duryea returned to Massachusetts and opened the Duryea Motor Wagon Company with his brother Charles. They produced 13 hand-built cars from 1894-1896 – the first automobile company in the U.S.

The only other car to finish, an imported German Benz sponsored by the Hieronymous Mueller Company of Decatur, Illinois, crossed the finish line an hour and a half later.

Duryea had to stop several times for mechanical repairs, only one of two cylinders was still firing, and the rubber tubes on his car's wheels reportedly had fallen off and had been tied back on with twine.

The winner was Frank Duryea, an inventor from Massachusetts, who limped across the finish line with a time of 10 hours and 23 minutes. (Average speed just over 5 mph/8 kph.)

Even so, the snow and bitter cold made for a very difficult course. There were several accidents and mechanical failures, and reportedly the two battery-powered vehicles failed not long after the start. At least two of the drivers had to be taken to the hospital due to hypothermia.

The race was originally intended to go from Chicago to Milwaukee, but due to hazardous road conditions in Wisconsin, the route was shortened to turn around in Evanston, IL, and head back to Chicago.

Only six vehicles ended up participating, four gasoline-powered and two electric. Only two finished the 54-mile route.

There were originally more than 80 registrants for the race, but most of them dropped out, either because their vehicles weren't ready in time, or due to a snowstorm that had dropped six inches of snow on the city streets the night before.

Some have argued that it may reflect the common usage of the word "chicken" to mean weak, as chickenpox has milder symptoms than smallpox.

Others suggest that it may have arisen because the red, itchy rash caused by chickenpox may look like the skin has been pecked by a chicken.

The name may have come from the Old English word "giccan," meaning "to itch." That word, in turn, may have become conflated with the OE word "cicen," meaning "young fowl."

The facets of a cubic pyrite crystal are square, those of an octahedral crystal are triangular, and on a dodecahedron are pentagonal.
