On June 24th 1859, Henry Dunant witnessed the horrors of the Battle of Solferino.

This inspired him to propose a treaty for armies to care for wounded soldiers & create national societies to support military medical services. In 1863, he co-founded the International Committee of the Red Cross 👇🏽

All parties involved in armed conflicts, whether it is a non-state armed group or a state, must protect civilians and civilian objects without excuses.

Civilians shouldn't bear the cost of the hostilities.

In 1912, we established a commemorative medal in honor of nurse Florence Nightingale to recognize individuals who set an example of dedication and sacrifice in nursing and healthcare. This year, 37 nurses from 17 countries have been awarded.
