We discover that the transcription factor JUNB is expressed in human but not mouse progenitors, where it bidirectionally controls progenitor proliferation, neuronal output, & cortical expansion.

Using this atlas, we highlight conserved and divergent gene expression patterns in radial glia, neurons and intermediate progenitors. The latter cells are most divergent, suggesting that they are key players of interspecies differences in cortical architecture.

To do this, we first generated a cell-type specific atlas of the developing mouse, human & organoid cortex using available scRNA-seq datasets. This resource is freely available here: www.humous.org

✨ We tend to think of species-specific differences as resulting from the presence of species-specific genes. In our latest work with @djabaudon.bsky.social, we show that building brains is not only about which genes you use, but also about when and where you do.
