I read the first one, and I thought it was meh, and then Hogfather, which is not much of a book but just a long lead-up to Death’s speech ( which is awesome).

I just finished reading it. I haven’t loved the Discworld books I’ve read before, but Small Gods is really good.

This, however, is an error in thought. Not only is such a despotism impossible in a democracy, it is capable of being weaponized against them far easier than for them. Progressive values will ALWAYS be Othered. It’s baked into the concept.
