With Tom Lehrer's passing, I suppose this is a moment to share the story of the prank he played on the National Security Agency, and how it went undiscovered for nearly 60 years.

Currently sitting in a parking lot (waiting). A nearby car's alarm has been going off continuously for the better part of an hour. No one cares.

Seems on point.

I thought this article was very insightful for #programming in general, but also for scientific computing and #HPC 🔭⚛️🧪

American TV shows based on foreign ones should have one episode, in season 2, where they meet the foreign show. Just, like, that whole cast shows up in character for a team-up.

So when a health insurance company (or any other company or person ftm) says “it’s an AI deciding this” what they really say is “our executive leadership deliberately choose to let an AI decide they fully know is fundamentally flawed”.

It always comes back to Weizenbaum’s book from 50 years ago.

I walked our dog yesterday night (on a leash). I saw a Smelly Cat (*) at the side of the road, and so did the dog. He yanked the leash, the cat ran away, and we were engulfed in the smell.

At home it turned out that the dog was completely clean (the wife confirmed), but I wasn't...
