🚄 Italy, a pioneer in ERTMS and High-Speed Rail 🇮🇹

This system has played a key role in increasing rail transport’s market share in the country, and the completion of the High-Speed network is expected to bring even greater economic and social benefits.

Italy, a pioneer in ERTMS and High-Speed Rail 🇮🇹 Italy has been an early investor in ERTMS. This system has played a key role in increasing rail transport’s market share in the country, and the completion of the High-Speed network is expected to bring even greater economic and social benefits. Since the early 2000s, Italy has been heavily investing in High-Speed lines, with the first ERTMS-equipped lines launched in 2005. Today, RFI (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana) has initiated an accelerated plan to deploy ERTMS across the entire national railway network by 2036. This ambitious project represents a total investment of €15 billion. 10,236 km of the Italian network is part of the TEN-T network. The EC has selected 94 transport projects to receive nearly €2.8 billion in EU grants under the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) 2024 call — a major milestone in advancing the EU’s sustainable and interoperable transport network.

🌄 Spain is at the forefront of ERTMS deployment, with over 2,900 km of lines in service and 400+ trains equipped. Key routes, like Madrid-Barcelona, now see rail replacing air travel, with market share jumping from 48% to 82% by 2023!
