It's a brutal time for young men, and to be raising one. The primary message they now is get is "YOU'RE BAD" without any meaningful attempt to offer healthy pathways beyond "Don't be a boy."

A lot of men who have misogynistic beliefs actually don’t hold them too tightly. They mostly want to impress and bond with other men.
Just being unimpressed—or even judgmental!—is often enough to get them to change their beliefs. If they’re encountering that reaction on a regular basis.

Even men who are insist they are not misogynists expect men to be centered in conversations of the problems women face (ie, patriarchy hurts men too, men also experience sexual assault — which is true, but only derails conversations & recenters attention from women to men).

Ultimately, I think one of the main reasons we tell women to respond to radicalized, misogynistic men with “empathy” is because it reinforces gender hierarchy.
It allows men to retain control and focus, while women are tasked (again) with managing their (and our own!) emotions.
