Eh, really doesn’t have the same impact, and only works with a limited number of situations.
Today I rediscovered one of my favorite romantic songs, titled “Je voudrais vous revoir” (I’d like to see you again), in which the aging narrator uses “vous” to address a former lover — and there’s a lot of emotional weight behind the fact that he switches to “tu” in the song’s very last sentence.
