NASA has a cool competition going on for adults and students to design the zero g indicator that will launch to the Moon aboard Artemis II! This is the Moon Mascot design challenge.

Deadline is May 27.

Check out all the details here: www.freelancer.com/contest/Moon...

I'm helping run a STEAM competition for middle and high school girls! The Tech Runway competition challenges students to create an accessory that combines science, style, and technology.

Check out more info here, and pass it along to anyone who might be interested: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

“Call me, beep me, if ya wanna reach me!”

I used to be an avid cosplayer and just got a reminder from Facebook that 10 years ago today, @alexknightbooks.bsky.social and I wore one of my favorite cosplays: Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable!

The Astrobees, the cube follow-on experiment to these circular robots, are more robot-like, while the SPHERES, were more satellite-like. Astrobees are designed to be astronaut assistants while the SPHERES weren’t meant to interact much with crew or their environment.

My personal favorite experiments they were a part of was the SPHERES-Slosh experiment which helped researchers better understand the forces that fuel may create in spacecraft and satellite fuel tanks in microgravity.
January 12, 2025 at 10:28 PM
SPHERES stands for Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites (because NASA sure loves a long acronym) and helped performed more than 600 experiments aboard the ISS for over a decade.

And if they look familiar, it is because they were inspired by the floating droid that helped Luke Skywalker practice his Jedi skills in Star Wars.

I love space robots, so I have to introduce you to some of the first robotic residents of the International Space Station.

Meet the SPHERES, launched to station in 2006, to help with a number of microgravity research studies.

Happy Holidays everyone! ✨ I hope your holiday season is filled with clear skies for stargazing and great people to share it with.
December 25, 2024 at 2:48 PM
Them: Let me guess, you sent out your holiday cards using space stamps, right? 🔭🪐

Me: Well, actually, I’m a nerd in many different ways. 🧝‍♀️🐉🧙

(And also have a husband that writes fantasy books for a living)

That same plane is also now on display outside of Space Center Houston! Upon the plane's retirement in 2012, it had flown 11,018 flight hours over 42 years, both as a commercial jetliner and as a NASA space shuttle carrier.

Today's cool family pictures from space history:

🌊 I joined the Order of the Rock, sailing through the Gibraltar Strait (and seeing Africa for the first time)!

⛴️ I learned what it means to truly spend two months without stepping foot on land!

Here’s to continuing to chase after more experiences like this in the future.
December 12, 2024 at 2:46 PM
Those months were filled with so many amazing experiences.

🔬I fulfilled my dream of sharing science stories in the field as they are happening.

🌏 I met incredible scientists from all around the globe.

🪨 I learned so much about geology and paleoclimatology from incredible experts on their field.

Yesterday was the 1 year anniversary from when I boarded the JOIDES Resolution to start 2 months at sea for science!

So I think that deserves a photo dump from the experience.

Modern pinball machine manufacturers: We need a big cool license like Jaws or John Wick, tons of flashing lights and complex rules.

Old pinball machine manufacturers: We made a machine inspired by a river boat. Enjoy.

The Astrobees are platforms for different robotic experiments, and this one is known as Responsive Engaging Arms for Captive Care and Handling or REACCH. It is testing how well these arms can grab items made of a number of materials including smooth and rough surfaces.

So my favorite space robots now HAVE ARMS!

The Astrobees, Honey Bumble and Queen have been on the space station for years now, and I think these robots lose a bit more on the cuteness scale and increase on the scary scale with their large arms.

But they’ve been given them for good reason.

Notre Dame has officially reopened.

In a new article for Engineering.com, I dove into how a complex computer model of the original building was assembled and used in everything from planning construction to improving the lighting inside the cathedral.

My 2024 Pinball Wrapped dropped on the same day as Spotify Wrapped! What a coincidence. 👀

Here's to another great year of meeting new friends, playing great games, and learning to flip.
