She/her. International climate campaigner on Boon Wurrung land. Not American.

Fix your hearts or die.
Also hi, I’ve been kind of offline but keeping busy - from ducking across the Pacific to chat multilateralism, to scheming in Japan with a kid in tow (she hit a big milestone: first parliamentary briefing, when she included a drawing about melting ice sheets in my presentation 😍)

(Side note that the development bit pops up here too. It tracks with what I heard from MPs at the Diet back in Feb; they've been briefed that lower-income countries are asking Japan for gas as part of their self-determined development trajectories. Which is, in diplomatic terms, absolute bullshit.)

And let's not forget, the strategy was on METI's website - in English - for the general public to see as early as 2020: www.enecho.meti.go.jp/en/category/...

This isn't new to anyone who has been tracking the Japanese gas on-selling story. Just last week (pre-tariff chaos), Tokyo Gas were in the US openly spruiking their interest in acquiring more shale gas for the explicit purpose of selling it throughout Asia.

Having heard whispers of the Coalition's proposed gas reservation policy, Terazawa has done what he does; summon the foreign journos to proclaim his grievances. Standard stuff. So what's different here? This bit.

Another day, another besuited Japanese man (always men) weighing in/chucking a tanty about Australian gas proposals. Good morning Tatsuya Terazawa, nice to hear from you… again. And again, and again. www.afr.com/world/asia/j...

Good show of locals out at the office of Wills MP Peter Khalil, calling for Labor to take the coal out of our stockings and cancel the approval of three new fossil fuel projects this Christmas 🎄

Genuinely a small delight to hear guys in suits at the airport talking about the civil society actions they saw on the ground at #COP29 while shopping around their carbon capture agribusiness whatever. Always here, always fighting ✊🏽

The #COP29 venue has finally livened up after LDCs and AOSIS walk out on consultations over the unworkability of the finance text. Once again an example of SIDS setting the standard, and proving the value of spaces like this over the G20 or G7

At least there are no lines for coffee anymore
November 23, 2024 at 4:54 AM
Back again, into #COP29 overtime. It’s a waiting game after a long night of booked then abruptly cancelled presidential plenaries; abject fury from the Global South (AOSIS said the text shows ‘contempt for our vulnerable people’), and some bold civil society action. We’re still here, still fighting.

And our last Fossil of the Day award, for the overall #COP29 Colossal Fossil, goes to all Annex 2 countries for their shamefully low climate finance ambition. Thus technically continuing Australia’s award-winning streak!

7am in Baku with coffee in my tasteful new mug (not an endorsement of the NCQG metaphor, btw).

#COP29 presidency is continuing overnight bilaterals on the NCQG, GST and MWP until 'late morning'. Text expected in the evening with potentially little scope to change. Going to need more onion coffee.

Japan’s minister for the environment spinning some anime level high fantasy at #COP29. He spruiks AZEC as ‘moving countries from fossil fuel dependency’, then leaves the pavilion before anyone can point out that 35% of all AZEC MOUs include fossil fuel tech: zerocarbon-analytics.org/archives/ene...

Good day at #COP29 for Korean 친구들 profiling South Korea's position blocking an outcome on fossil finance at the OECD this week. Second year running for a Fossil of the Day award, it's starting to seem like a habit.

LDCs: (said with all affection because I love this stupid song and video)
November 18, 2024 at 4:47 PM
BRAZIL: (Someone else meaning a high-income and high-emitting country, potentially one that also wants a COP presidency. Anyone heard of one of those?)
November 18, 2024 at 4:47 PM
The handful of world leaders have left #COP29 (probably all fitting on one unreliable Azeri shuttle bus?), so now the real fun starts. Activists have ascended Baku stadium's seating to put the call for Global North polluters to #PayUp where it belongs: looming large over the negotiations.

Make by the four year old at kindy, of her own accord. These kids, they’re alright

Cracker of a Twitter thread from Vanuatu’s Ralph Regenvanu at the International Maritime Organisation meetings on climate ambition in shipping. Makes it clear that countries standing in the way (hi Australia) do so on grounds of disinformation and absence of political will
