I visited Sequim, WA, ten years ago and found a gorgeous poppy field that felt like a painting. During my 2025 visit, the field was gone, but this little patch remained. It brought me so much joy to paint "Lavender Poppies."

I visited San Miguel de Allende in Mexico this summer. I loved the colors in this town--rich, royal hues of blue, marigold, and coral. This purple and orange bougainvillea caught my eye; the orange blooms against the adobe wall were striking. I returned to Washington this year on photo safari, and one of my goals for the trip was to find this one meadow of red poppies that I had seen ten years ago growing next to a field of lavender in Sequim. I returned to the same location, but unfortunately, the field of poppies had been replaced by Shasta daisies (which I ended up painting anyway)... but as I was walking around the landscape between the lavender fields, I discovered this one tiny patch of red poppies still remaining from all those years ago, tucked away underneath a white fence. I took dozens of photos of this tiny patch of poppies, and this is the first painting I created of that memory. Mount Rainier is a beautiful peak that can be seen from many locations across Washington. This summer, I went for a hike along the summit trail. During the hike, I watched as clouds covered the mountain, thinning into wisps of fog as I walked through flower-filled meadows.
