"Would you like to see some bugs?" The answer is always yes! Barrett Klein shows my colleague Jess some of his collection as we headed to the Oregon Convention Center for Day 2 of #EntSoc25

Energizing opening plenary for #EntSoc25 as Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy preached "the gospel of science" & encouraged entomologists to practice the art of storytelling to help better advocate for the critical role of insects to family, community, and policymakers. Think globally, act locally!

Great panel today to kick off ESA Science Policy Committee workshop on coalition building with Chris Looney, Scott Black of Xerces, past pres @jenniferahenke.bsky.social, & Sonny Ramaswamy. Key takeaway: understanding what motivation potential partners need to engage, the "so what?" #EntSoc25

Also, a hat tip to the Minneapolis airport where I had my layover, which had gorgeous murals in their restrooms!

Hello Portland, you beautiful city! Can't wait for #EntSoc25 to get underway!

Lovely brunch, including some free drinks, and some free ARCs from the local indie bookstore where we run our book club. Can't ask for a nicer start to a Sunday with my love.

As it turns out, I'd probably marry that man.

You know I like my day job when, on vacation, I drag my husband @wifeguy.org to meet a couple of awesome entomologists I work with who are faculty at the University of Maine, Dr. Angela Mech and Dr. Allie Gardner, so I can say hi and see their labs.

Our @entsocamerica.bsky.social Science Policy Fellows had a great day on Capitol Hill despite the rain, talking about new world screwworm, pollinators, the importance of federal funding, and other entomological priorities! Big thanks @ritchietorres.bsky.social‬ for the time today!

Great House Sci Cmte hearing today on AI and agrochemical development. Much convo about the importance of basic federal funded research to drive innovation. @entsocamerica.bsky.social member Dr. Daniel Swale of UF testified.

Also @greenlightbklyn.bsky.social is a cute place, and I bought my next read by Olivie Blake from there and was amused/sad to see a book about a friend from college who has passed, Virgil Abloh, there. But was thrilled to see Wisconsin in the glossary.

I ❤️ coffee, but this sign is such a bummer when you're not a morning person.

Had a great week meeting with Leigh from TNC meeting with staff from SASC, HASC, and Rep. Tokuda's staff to discuss how S&T progress on northern giant hornets can be applied to eradicate the greater banded hornet from Guam so it doesn't get to HI or the mainland US.

Stumbled upon a great panel today @peoplesbooktakoma.com on racism and the prison system with Dr. Kris Marsh of UMD, Dr. Brittany Friedman @curlyprofessor.bsky.social, and Pulitzer Prize winner Toluse Olorunnipa while we were out feeling sad and buying more books to make us feel a little better.

I had to preserve this line from an internal work email conversation because I'm fairly certain these words have never been uttered about me and likely never will be again! Happy Friday!

It's officially space heater season for mid-Atlantic pitties. And yes, they have multiple beds in the sun room but prefer to cuddle. #dogsofbluesky

I took my dad to the Air and Space Musuem while he was in town last week as I hadn't seen the updates. I was amazed at how large the Curiosity and Perseverance are! For some reason, I assumed they were small enough to fit in the Chewy box our 35 lbs bags of dog food arrive in.

Today I had the honor of presenting Sen. Angus King (I-ME) with the @entsocamerica.bsky.social Congressional Champion of Entomology. He & his great staff have co/sponsored bills such as the SMASH Act and the Kay Hagan Tick Act, joined us for an EAW webinar, & help address browntail moth.

Great keynote by Shawn Otto. The most productive scientists are often the most publicly engaged b/c they develop skills enabling them to clearly explain complex issues. When so many challenges have a strong scientific component, who's in a better position to help than you? #EntSoc24
