"Would you like to see some bugs?" The answer is always yes! Barrett Klein shows my colleague Jess some of his collection as we headed to the Oregon Convention Center for Day 2 of #EntSoc25

Energizing opening plenary for #EntSoc25 as Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy preached "the gospel of science" & encouraged entomologists to practice the art of storytelling to help better advocate for the critical role of insects to family, community, and policymakers. Think globally, act locally!

Great panel today to kick off ESA Science Policy Committee workshop on coalition building with Chris Looney, Scott Black of Xerces, past pres @jenniferahenke.bsky.social, & Sonny Ramaswamy. Key takeaway: understanding what motivation potential partners need to engage, the "so what?" #EntSoc25

Lovely brunch, including some free drinks, and some free ARCs from the local indie bookstore where we run our book club. Can't ask for a nicer start to a Sunday with my love.

It's the time of year again -- time to do your holiday shopping from independent artists. It's more important than ever to support people actually making stuff!

If you're an artist or craftsperson of any kind, please reply to this with what you make and a link to your store and I'll share it!

Just started "The Mysteries of Udolpho". The villain is revealed by telling the former owner of his chateau that he plans to tear down the east wing to build a monstrous addition & cut down the ancient chestnut tree, as there can neither be "use, or beauty, in such a sapless old tree as this."

Carl is a great science writer looking to hear stories about how this administration has disrupted research and lives. @entsocamerica.bsky.social His first story covers a scientist who studied native #pollinators
We will be writing more of these. If you’re a scientist and your science has been disrupted, we want to hear from you: www.nytimes.com/2025/10/08/c...

The Ig Nobel is incredible , one year an Indian guy won it for calculating the average surface area of an elephant and during his acceptance they had an elephant hold up a sign with the surface area of the scientist on it, they do showbiz better than the Oscars
Video: a Japanese scientist was attacked by flies while giving the acceptance speech for his Ig Nobel Prize-winning research paper that proved painting Zebra-like stripes on cows led to a decrease in biting fly attacks.

Great piece by former USDA NIFA director Sonny Ramaswamy on the very real challenges for humans being exacerbated by the Administration's efforts to slash funding for R&D.

This has been a tough week. If you need a change of scene immediately, I recommend the following films: the thoughtful and contemplative "Paterson" by Jim Jarmusch (my husband's rec which I enjoyed) and the brilliant and life affirming "Stranger Than Fiction". Maybe in that order.

Yesterday at breakfast a waitress had to clarify someone’s cheese order with ‘feta, with an F’ which made no sense to me until my wife reminded me how people in the northeast pronounce ‘cheddar’

You know I like my day job when, on vacation, I drag my husband @wifeguy.org to meet a couple of awesome entomologists I work with who are faculty at the University of Maine, Dr. Angela Mech and Dr. Allie Gardner, so I can say hi and see their labs.
