Author, author! I write novels and poetry, and teach scientists to tell stories. Latest books: a knife so sharp its edge cannot be seen (poetry) and Simon Sort of Says (middle grade novel). NEWBERY HONOR WINNER BABY!!!!!
Pinned
My VERY BIG NEWS is official. I am writing a series with my Simon Sort of Says team at Disney books.
Example from my sketchbook diary of how picking one thing to record every day sometimes makes unexpected connections.

Not quite sure about the new sketchbook. The last two were watercolor sketchbooks, but they have so few pages. This one is mixed media, and a more satisfying length, but sketch mostly with India ink in a fountain pen. There’s some ghosting — not terrible but visible.

First spread in a brand-new sketchbook diary - my third. I find all- black objects hard to capture, but I am pleased with this sketch of my cat Cygnus. #cygnustheemotionalsupportcat

I want this moment for us
Good morning to Brazilian reporter Manuela Borges, who’s been waiting eleven years for this petty moment. ❤️ 🇧🇷

I really wish we'd stop calling them climate "skeptics" or "vaccine skeptics", if you jump off a cliff we don't call you a "gravity skeptic"

Writers and librarians, speak to me of archives.

We are cleaning out the Doom Room in our house. I have uncovered multiple bankers boxes full of my novel drafts and notebooks full of scribbles and research etc.

Quick cartoon. I was hoping to stay unplugged this week but I saw some news and had to take a break to draw this out. I think we all needed to see it realized.

I had a GP appt today, and we were comparing notes on treating my POTS and I mentioned the new hives thing maybe indicated MCAS and said “I know you must dread people who did their own research.”

Doctor: oh, no, you’re okay; this is great.”

Me: really?

Sometimes I spiral. The spiral is called the “I need to - I want to - I can’t” aka “is it ADHD or do I just suck?”

It’s hot chocolate season! I love the drinking chocolate from Soma chocolate makers in Toronto.

First snow - a big snowfall on top of unshed leaves, like autumn throwing on a winter coat.

Lovely but it made a mess of travel. My flight to Boston got cancelled and I had to do my school visits over zoom. So disappointing.

We showcase Drawdown’s “Climate Solution of the Week”, reminding us all that we already have everything we need to stop climate change.

We just need to *focus on the right tools* — not greenwashing or science-fiction tech toys — and *get busy scaling them* as quickly and effectively as possible.
💡 Lighting accounts for 15–20% of a building’s electricity use, so switching to energy-efficient LEDs is a bright idea—it reduces electricity consumption and cuts greenhouse gas emissions from power generation.

Check out the full solution details in the Drawdown Explorer. 🔗 https://bit.ly/47p7kOP

Today’s sketchbook school assignment was to draw what you buy. And to quote the red text “oh boy. I didn’t want to do this. For me, money is stressful, private.

“For me, spending = shame, even if it something as mundane as a pillcase.”

One of the less-noted awesome things about getting older as a woman is the way escaping the male gaze changes the import of how one cultivates one’s own appearance.

Today’s @sketchbookskool.bsky.social prompt was a collection — so here is some of my most-worn jewelry.
My clothing tends to “black tshirt” but my jewelry helps me feel eccentric and glorious. I want to look like the main character in my own life.
