Well, I conscripted my wife to help. In the end the consensus was, "keep flipping the switches until something good happens."
We finally got it, but it doesn't make any sense. All switches are DOWN (accepted visual symbol for OFF); one side light is green while the other is red.

What's the artificial constraint here? I assumed "activate using the middle switch ALONE" meant the middle switch needed to be at the end of the chain.

Background is light, outline is light. Easy to miss when you're rushing. The interactivity tooltip doesn't show up on the bulk of this panel; it only shows up on the bottom edges.
