I think we can do better than generic lists, so I wrote about it

Making an element interactive with a tabindex? Name it!

Don't name an element nested in it. This does not work. The name needs to be on the element that you can -focus-.

Hiding a house number in the back of my garden does not help identify my house from the front.

I'm considering streaming again.

Live UX/accessibility reviews of websites. Weighing the pros and cons.

What do you think would make this a good idea?

Busy with 3d printing. Feels like it's 95% "stuff you don't really need" and "stuff with kitchy design".
So far I'm focussing on toys and things for the kids.

(Not my picture but I did print this one)

What a week in the Dolomites has taught me about accessibility..

Living in the flat and low Netherlands might be how I came to this insight: mountains are just amazing.

Accessibility is fun and all. It feels pretty good to include 20-25% of the world population. (Try it sometime!)

I've been looking forward to share a picture of my workspace. It's been a work in progress. It's pretty cleaned up, and I'm afraid plants will die again soon. So best time to post is now 😬

It's my happy space and I love working from home. 🙏🏿

Summer time!

I've got about 20 blogspost in mind, that I want videos of as well.
There's writing a free foundational "introduction to accessibility"-course
And a free "accessible social media"-course
And a more extensive paid course

Oh, and 2 weeks of Northern Italy!

What are your summer plans? 😇

Paste the following in your browser console to get a list of all items with a tabindex-attribute.

Dear designer,

A practical tip. When you want to emphasize something, please increase the contrast instead of lowering it.

(Color contrast is a tool you control. Support your users!)

Hey developer, you can do less!

Role not needed. The button-element already communicates it intends to be a button!
Tabindex not needed. The button-element is interactive by itself!
Aria-label not needed. The button-element is already named by its content!

But thanks for your effort 💚

The web has given me something new to detest today. 🎁

It's like they took the experience of having no visible keyboard focus, and reinvented it for mouse-users. The creativity is impressive 😬

(Context. On a modern div-site, this makes everything seem interactive.)

FYI, if you're using jQuery and write something like this.

❌ This will not trigger with a keyboard, screen reader or other software/device using the keyboard API.

🧠 Maybe avoid jQuery for this

If your HTML-element looks like a heading, functions like a heading and has a class like "heading".... maybe make it a heading? 💡

Help is there, but not if you're using a keyboard

Note: tabindex="-1" makes this info-button unfocusable.

What do you think when you see this picture?

It's a Lamborghini, a very expensive sports car, in an extra large parking space for people with disabilities.

Alt text is not what you add to an image. It's what you start with.

My process for writing alt text is my process for adding images. It might feel backwards.

1. Define what you want to communicate. (This is your alt text)
2. Find an image that communicates that.

But Erik, issues from rescaling a website? Isn't that like a... pre-mobile web kind of thing?

Meanwhile, one of the most popular plugins (Google Site Kit), on the most popular platform (Wordpress):

I strongly dislike being a gatekeeper. But I think only Dutch people understand how wonderful it is to get this -water bottle- as a birthday gift.

When writing about contrast, what do you write?

- 3:1
- 3.0:1
- 3.00:1
- Something else?

(And why?)

I love meeting people and spending time together. And I see so many events happening, it's giving me FOMO!

But sorry, I can't be there with you all. And I know many others can't either. Come hang in my discord? We've got a nice spot with people who like being inclusive.

Instead of repeating advice, I like writing it down. This time: what should you test accessibility with?

If you'd ask me: don't start testing with a screen reader.
