PREFACE "Not another AI book,” you have every reason to utter wearily on hauling this tome into focus. A brief glance at the index will confirm that ELIZA, SHRDL, MYCIN, TEIRESIAS, AM — all your old favorites — are here. But if I'm lucky, your tired eye will also notice that this book is saturated with discussions of “connectionist” theory and systems — the larval forms of a new species of ai, perhaps. All other AI texts take the Symbolic Search Space Paradigm as the single model for all AI — I question the desirability as well as the validity of this monolithic approach to the design and development of intelligent artifacts. In addition, oddities like AI methodology, competing AI paradigms, foundations of AI, and many other rarely discussed aspects of AI are referenced. Not only are they indexed, they are also discussed at length and with references to the popular AI programs. That, in a few sentences (if not exactly in a nutshell) is the basis for my claim that this is just yet another AI book. From A New Guide to Artificial Intelligence (1991)

My favorite comment on the FT story
Personally I'd be impressed if they could make something as smart as an ant. Ants only have 250,000 neurons, which is pretty small compared with GPT-5's reputed more than one trillion parameters. And yet ants are able to survive all by themselves in this complex world of ours, without endless infusions of investor capital or government subsidies. I don't think GPT-5 could do that.
