“It’s just a headache. Eyestrain,” Cait growled. “I will be fine.” “Da-ad…” Cora said quietly but insistently behind him. “Ask her what color this is?” She held something out to him, and his heart turned over in his chest. It was one of her oldest toys, a floppy manta ray of purple fleece and shiny black satin embroidered with constellations. He’d gotten it for her just after the divorce, something for her to hold onto when everything else changed. The fleece was grubby now, half the constellations gone and the satin gone shiny with the patina of love. “This side.” She pointed to the satin. “Cait?” Sam kept his voice low—he’d had enough hangovers in his past that he knew how to handle a headache. “Would you—?” She cracked an eye open, shifted enough to see what he was holding. “Purple,” she said shortly. “Purple fleece, purple satin.” She let her head fall back against the bunk. “Ha! I knew it! Cait sees UV, Dad! That’s why she has a headache.” How Cora managed to sound that excited in a whisper, he would never know. One of Cait’s hands waved tiredly in Cora’s general direction. “Give the kid an ‘A’ in optics.” Cora practically danced at the praise. “I can see a few hundred angstroms beyond the visible spectrum. Yes, Cora, both ends, that means near-IR too.” “Oh, wow!” Cora exulted. “You’ve got your very own superpower!” Cait sounded less than thrilled at the idea. “More in theory than in practice. I don’t see far enough into the UV to make a huge difference, and sometimes it actually causes problems.” “But still,” Cora said doggedly, “you must be really good at detecting things. Like Poirot or Holmes! Like—like the other day when you pointed out the difference between the two flowers I collected! They looked the same, but you didn’t even need to scan them!” “They were—” Cait started to say, and then let out an exasperated breath. “Hell. That when you figured it out?”

Sloane's head turned toward him, but her blank gaze was a few inches off. Her mouth curved in a humorless, razored parody of a smile. “You're me. You already know the answer.” She fell silent for a moment. “Oh. *That's* why him.” She started to laugh, unsteady and more than a little unhinged. “Thought you went along with my legs. And my arms. And my eyes.” “So what—I’m the part of you that doesn’t give up?” he said, trying to navigate the bizarre twists and turns the conversation was taking. He took a cautious glance at her CASIE readings, but they were utter chaos, changing from second to second in ways that had nothing to do with the woman he knew. “No.“ Another of those humorless laughs. “That’s just… spite.” “I don't understand,” Adam said, frustrated. “Then who—what—am I supposed to be?” “The part of me that remembers how to hope.” Her answer gutted him, but not as badly as what came next. “Kinda wish you’d stayed gone.” “Why me?” he asked as gently as he could. Her voice was as dull as her blinded eyes, “Adam's a fucking idealist. He still believes he can change things for the better.” More quietly, she added, “I admire that. Even if he is a fucking idiot about it and it's going to get him killed one of these days.” She ducked her head into her shoulder, but not before he saw the glint of tears on her cheeks. “And that’s not the point anyway.” “What’s so bad about hoping for better?” he pressed. “False hope is worse than none,” she growled—*that*, at least, was pure Sloane—and it was an effort of will not to retort that the lack of hope was the worst kind of false hope. He’d argue that with her when she was talking to *him* and not a shadow of her own mind.

It was a center of art and technology that opened its arms to tourists and tradesmen alike, where glittering towers of glass and metal spired over basilicas of stone. But beneath the glittering surface were currents far more dangerous than those of the Dnieper, where the Dvali and the Solntsevskaya Bratva struggled to become the dominant Eastern European criminal organization, the Jinn took advantage of the infighting, and a host of lesser scavengers fought over the scraps. It was a good place for people like Walther Franks and his partner, Evangeline Broussard, to go when they ran out of options. The professional bodyguards—mercs, to be brutally honest—had been forced to leave Prague in a hurry after their employer died under mysterious circumstances. There was no lack of employment in Kyiv, so long as one wasn’t too particular about where the money came from. Even for the augmented: it wasn’t that there were fewer restrictions to deal with; it was just much easier to buy your way past them. There was an old saying that if one had guns, one could acquire money. In Kyiv, the inverse was just as true, and convenient for people like Walther and Evangeline, who’d rather go without clothes than without weapons. The need to correct their temporarily unarmed condition had led them to a grubby apartment on the wrong side of the river, where the only thing exchanged was credits, and where anonymity ruled. And that, Walther thought, as he flipped through the dealer’s inventory screen, was just as well, because all hell would break loose if anyone here discovered that Walther Franks, mercenary, was actually Adam Jensen, agent of TF-29. Of course, that wasn't the only reason for all hell to break loose, as the commotion around his partner showed…

Jacob was truculent as ever. "I wanted to see my granddaughter, not your... latest fling." his growl trailed off as he saw Sam's arm wrapped around Cait. "Latest fling?" Cait said lightly, before the stress fracturing Sam's spirit could flash into anger. "That's nicer than 'Constellation lackey,' if not by much." She looked up at her lover as if Jacob weren't even there. "Sam, what does a lackey do anyway? Sarah didn't cover that in my orientation." "'Cause you're way too much of a smartass to make a good lackey," Sam replied, just as lightly. The tension inside him released enough to let him find a semblance of his usual good humor. His arm tightened briefly around her waist, echoed by the ephemeral sense of his genuine gratitude. "Well," she said cheerily, "that just makes me perfect for you, doesn't it?" Sam chuckled again, but quickly grew serious. While he wasn't as acidly angry as he usually was when talking to Jacob, there was no give in his voice or face. "The phrase you're looking for is _future wife_." Shock flashed through Jacob, a bolt of lighting that burned through his usual sour resentment to wake something colder, sharper. "I would hope," Cait said gently, in an attempt to divert his usual vitriol, "that whatever else might lie between the two of you, you could be happy for Sam." "Happy?" Jacob's eyes widened incredulously. "You expect me to be happy to see *my son* tricked into wedlock by some half-alien tramp?"

No sooner had the door fallen shut behind him, eyeshades retracting, than Sloane rounded on him. "You kissed me," she snapped, her eyes flashing copper in the dim light. His temper, stressed from the night’s subterfuge, tried to slip its leash. Adam let his voice slide back into its normal register. “Yeah. I did.” It felt good to sound like himself again. “In case you forgot, sweetheart, you kissed me right back, and it sure seemed like you liked it." Her scowl made the uncertainty he’d been holding off start to creep back in. “Or maybe I’m wrong. I—” She didn’t look any less angry. “No,” she admitted, sounding like the words were being dragged out of her. “No… you’re not. But—” "I didn’t intend for it to happen.” *Didn’t want it*, came the unbidden thought, and it was such a tangled knot of true and not-true that all he could do was shove the thought away. “Truth is, it happened because we wanted it to. *Both* of us.” He took a deep breath. “And I can’t regret it. Not one damned bit.” “Is that so?” Her voice was dangerously soft, and he wasn’t sure whether she wanted to kiss or kill him. Probably both—he just wondered which one would win out: fierce independence or hypergolic chemistry. “Yeah,” he said. “It is. Look, Sloane, we’ve been dancing around each other—around this—for weeks now. It’s *not* going away.”

The grime-streaked ceramic tile walls still managed to look obscenely clean, even shiny, against the mildewed grout, but that was only an illusion. Some unidentifiable slime groped its way down the glaze of the tile, its mindless mass drawn not by gravity but by some other motion. It gave off a gooey blue light, not a glow but flickering, unsteady sparks that made Adam’s eyes glitch. The brightest flashes were near the ceiling—where the almost-clear substance was thickest—and came from deep within it. “The fuck is *that*?” he whispered hoarsely. Sloane trained her light on it. “Slime mold,” she said. Her head turned away quickly at one of those bright flashes. “Radiotrophic.” He remembered *that* word from the boar. “I think that’s Cherenkov radiation.” He didn’t know much about Cherenkov radiation, other than it was blue and that being around it was probably bad. The nerves in his cybernetic arms twitched and spasmed uncomfortably; he’d have dismissed it as phantom sensation, but he saw Sloane jump and rub annoyedly at her arm. “Can we—?” He gestured toward the gaping hole in the wall, past the glittering edges of broken glass and the desolate workbenches abandoned in mid-use, the forgotten tools succumbing to rust. “Yeah,” she agreed. The next room was lined in metal racks, the steel broken out in a rusty pox. Jars of amber glass and yellowed plastic had been shoved haphazardly onto the shelves; here and there, a transparent bag containing some noxiously bright reagent slouched against its neighbors. Shattered test tubes still coated in day-glo yellow peeked out from beneath the soft snowfall of labels that had long since surrendered to the damp, scattered about like the carcasses of paper butterflies.

Caitlyn was already heading toward the city, a tension in her shoulders the only visible sign of what had just happened. He stretched his legs out to catch up with her. “Hey,” he said quietly. She ignored him. “Hey!” he said a little more insistently. She stopped—reluctantly, it seemed—and turned toward him. He gentled his voice. “You okay?” She looked at him like his question had no meaning. Finally, she said, “I’m fine.” Her voice was barely audible over the spaceport bustle. Sam snorted humorlessly. “Yeah, no. Maybe try that one again when you don’t look like you’ve just been kicked in the teeth.” “This… happens,” Caitlyn said slowly, and shrugged. “It could have gone worse.” He thought she might be studying him. “You shouldn’t have gotten involved.” He could feel his eyes widen in disbelief. “I shouldn’t—You—” He shook his finger at her once, hard. “We are gonna have some *words* about this.” He glanced around, where people were looking on curiously. “Later. In private.” “I suppose you’re not going to just drop it,” she said. She looked away from him. “Um. You didn’t—but thank you.” Sam gave her a hard look. “Seems we need to make something else clear. You ride with me, I have your back. Period. *Understand* that.” That seemed to take her aback. “Now, let’s get moving. We’ve made enough of a scene.” She flushed, then paled; without another word, she started on her way again.

Even across the room, he caught a sharp scent, enough to cut through the scent of decay. It smelled like— “Bleach?” “Tropical-grade bleach will kill just about anything,” Delacourt said.
