They are all replacements for what used to happen, which was being dragged out of their homes and beaten with lead pipes. The modern state with those features was the middle ground!

It isn’t inconsistent with conservatism, it’s the logical next step to protect the order it values most. Buying into that view of course comes down to whether one sees any daylight between reactionaries and conservatives in practice.

I’d argue conservatism is, at its core, about preserving existing hierarchies above all else. When conservatives feel those hierarchies slipping, they’re fine to use state power to reinforce them. Building state-backed cultural institutions is part of that.
