Prof can be late for many things, but being late for a thesis evaluation—especially for an international student—is one of the worst. Their timelines are tight, their visas depend on it, and delays can mean real extra costs.

New paper led by Tesnime Touil:
Can we predict SARA in cows from milk?

Tested 36 ML models on FTIR spectra from 107 cows.
✔️ SARA predicted with up to 69% accuracy
❌ Reticuloruminal pH not reliably predictable

Predicting reticuloruminal pH and subacute ruminal acidosis of individual cows using machine learning and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy milk analysis
Low reticuloruminal pH (rpH) for a prolonged period could lead to SARA. This disease negatively affects cow health and is associated with monetary losses for the dairy industry. The aim of this study ...

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

Reviewers want 'more contemporary literature' to support cross-validation. Since when are good old classic papers—cited thousands of times—not enough? What ‘contemporary’ sources do you need for a method studied since the 1970s?
