Elder Fredrick William Evans wrote several works tying Shaker belief to the desires of the reform eras of their day. He was seen as a more liberal-minded Shaker compared to others in the sect.

While this all provided a primary source window into the era, there was a particular detail that caught my attention. Near the end of his account, he shares letters he received in the aftermath of the trial (hatemail, functionally). They vary from threats to mere denunciation, but one caught my eye.

Undersherriff Osman Steele, had a reputation among the Anti-Renters. Think of him as the Sheriff of Nottingham to their Robin Hood. The Calico had even previously tried to capture him on a patrol and ransom him in exchange for some anti-rent prisoners locked away in Delhi, NY.

While their own party failed to take off as an independent 3rd party, the movement was boosted by sympathetic (or opportunistic, or both) political candidates in both political parties. Among them, a Whig lawyer who had helped the burgeoning movement--Ira Harris. (pictured here decades after)
