And there was no shortage of direct references or subtle homages to sci-fi’s past. Everything from Star Trek to Terminator to Close Encounters and more.

The Art of MotU is a collection of art from every iteration of MotU. Specifically, I’ve always loved the comic book art from the original 80s comic run. The art style was created by Alfredo Alcala, who was a prolific comic artist for both DC and Marvel.

• Invasion of the Body Snatchers- 1978, 4K. An excellent ‘70’s paranoia film. The first half is a little slow as it’s establishing the vibe and the slow burn paranoia. But once the action kicks in it’s basically akin to a zombie apocalypse movie. Also a first time viewing with my kids.

• The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remake)- 2003, 4K. I might get kicked out of the horror movie fan club but I like the 2003 version just as much as the 1974 version. Each has pros/cons. The 2003 ver. has a better story & better performances. It’s also shot and scored very well. Excellent 4K transfer.

• Nosferatu- 2024, 4K. Maybe the best screen adaptation of Dracula ever. A film that is drenched in mood and atmosphere but also doesn’t shy away from the grotesque. This was only the second time I’ve seen it, after seeing it in theaters last year

• Evil Dead 2- 1987, 4K. The film most people consider the best of the series. A perfect 50/50 blend of horror and comedy. I’ve probably seen it 15+ times on nearly every media format. Also a first time viewing with my kids.

• A Nightmare on Elm Street- 1984, 4K. A work of true creativity. The variety of special effects is amazing. And some of the ways the filmmakers come up with using the premise of dreams is inspired. And of course Freddy Krueger is iconic.

If you’ve got an appetite for good hard looks at some of these topics, especially immigration and racism and the manipulative powers those in authority wield, see this.

Great performances, long but well paced, never felt bloated or padded, and a visceral car chase sequence that sticks with you.
